Character Name: Erwin Smith

Canon: Attack on Titan
Canon Point: The night before the Survey Corps attacked Shiganshina to try and retake it. For those canon familiar, this is the day before he dies.
Character Age: While Erwin’s exact age is unclear, he’s implied to be in his mid-thirties.

Powers and Abilities: Erwin is highly athletic and a very skilled soldier, but he’s really just a regular guy. He has no super powers beyond a ridiculous work ethic and his skills with the manoeuvre gear; however, other characters in his canon are equally as skilled or better with the gear, which implies that it’s something anyone can learn. Erwin is very smart and has devoted a lot of time to developing his mind and strategizing, but again, it’s implied that other characters in his canon are equally as intelligent.

Character Questions:
1. Who is the person your character is most bonded with from their canon? Or who is someone they miss the most?

Erwin’s closest friend and confidante is Levi Ackerman. Their initial meeting wasn’t positive; Erwin and the Survey Corps charged into the underground where Levi was living and basically captured him by force. Despite that terrible beginning, the two men bonded and are deeply reliant on each other. Erwin is a gambler, and sometimes makes terrible, rash decisions in the pursuit of his goals. He depends on Levi to keep him grounded and realistic. Levi also gets to see the sides of Erwin he doesn’t show anyone else; Levi sees Erwin when he's filled with doubt and questioning everything he’s been doing.

2. What are they most afraid of?

Erwin’s greatest fear is stagnation. He is constantly driven forward in his canon, almost compulsively so, never relenting in his pursuit of his goals. Even after losing his dominant arm, Erwin refuses to take a backseat and continues leading the Survey Corps. He’s responsible for orchestrating a governmental coup, and then insists on leading a mission outside the walls to retake Shiganshina. This eventually leads to his death, when he leads the Survey Corps on a suicide charge against the Ape Titan in order to distract him so Levi can sneak around behind it.

3. What is their weakness? Emotionally, mentally and physically?

Erwin fears stagnation because it would force him to be alone with his thoughts. While only Levi is privy to it, Erwin suffers greatly from depression and self-doubt. Continually forcing himself forward is the only way he can stay ahead of the crippling mental illness that lags at his heels. This has been a problem for Erwin since he was a child, when his questions in a school classroom led directly to his father being taken away and executed. Erwin blames himself for this, and has devoted his adult life to proving his father’s theories correct in penance for his role in the man’s death. This drive has meant that Erwin is closed off emotionally to all but a select few (mostly Levi), and that boredom is one of his greatest enemies.

4. What would make them happiest?

Erwin loves learning new things! He gets very excited over new information and enjoys the process of fitting it into his current worldview. His wish was for more time, because he wants to know everything he can possibly learn about the world, and his own canon is a remarkably poor one for curious people. He is also aware that he’s an emotional basket case, and more time would give him a chance to actually work through some of his issues and become a healthier person. Again, his canon isn’t one that would have ever given him that opportunity, so the chance for him to have it in a game is one he’d enjoy.

5. What’s their type for a lover?

Erwin has never really had the time or space to get close to anyone. He’s the commander of a military group with high casualty rates; anyone he gets close to could very well die due to Erwin’s command. As such, he’s closed off that part of his life, beyond a brief crush when he was much younger.

And then he met Levi.

Erwin needs a lover who will be patient with him, and call him out on his bullshit. He also needs someone who will be encouraging when he gets caught up in whatever new idea tickles his fancy, and gently pull him back when he inevitably goes too far. Levi provides both these things in their canon, and while it’s never clear if the two are romantically involved, they’re close enough that they might as well be.
